When shopping for gaming storage for RPG, speed matters more than you think. Look for PCIe Gen 4 drives with read speeds above 6,000 MB/s—this is the sweet spot for eliminating load stutters and keeping your adventure flowing. Gen 5 drives exist but offer diminishing returns for gaming; save that budget for capacity instead.
Capacity is your second priority. Most modern AAA RPGs demand 100-150GB per install. If you play multiple titles simultaneously, aim for at least 1TB. A 2TB drive gives you breathing room for five or six major games plus your OS. Factor in that you'll never use 100% of advertised space—reserve 10-15% for optimal performance.
Form factor matters too. M.2 2280 is the standard for internal drives and fits virtually every modern PC and PS5. If you're upgrading a PlayStation 5 specifically, verify the drive has a heatspreader and fits Sony's 110mm length requirement—not all drives do.
Consider your use case. Internal drives are faster and cheaper per gigabyte, but external USB drives offer portability and work across consoles. For pure RPG performance, internal is your move.
